These are replacements for verses 2 and 3 of "As the Deer" (Psalm 42). Verse 1 and the refrain stay as originally written. I wrote these after listening to a reading of Psalm 42 at a contemplative worship service at Redwoods Presbyterian Church in Larkspur, California. My wife Eleanor and I were planning to sing "As the Deer" as part of the service, but after I heard the psalm again, verses 2 and 3 to "As the Deer," just didn't seem right. They didn't seem to capture some of the dynamics of the psalm itself. I wrote these during the periods of silence after the reading, and we sang them immediately after that. |
Verse 2
Days gone by, I felt strong and able,
Like a person of great worth.
Here and now, everything seems harder,
Are you absent from the earth?Refrain
Verse 3
I can see that you're always with me,
In my joy and in my tears.
You walk through all of life beside me
to the ending of my years.Refrain
